Salary range: $40,000 – $45,000

Position Summary

The Rehearsal Director is responsible for assisting the Artistic Director in the implementation of the artistic vision of the Company and in the preparation for and mounting of all performances and related events. Reporting to the Artistic Director, the Rehearsal Director is responsible for the training and development of all dancers while maintaining a high level of artistic integrity, safety, and appropriate working environment. Additionally, the Rehearsal Director represents Ballet Des Moines in certain public-facing roles, including acting as a tour liaison, teaching artist, and partnership coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the maintenance of dancers’ technique by providing classes and warm-ups at an outstanding level, delivering individual and remedial coaching as necessary;

  • Act as primary point of contact for BDM Trainees, supporting their training and development;

  • Assist Artistic Director, choreographers, and producers in the staging of all productions, including but not limited to:

    • Overseeing rehearsals of new and existing repertoire, including preparation and learning of these works using videos and/or notation when required;

    • Recording, referencing, and documenting choreography as required;

    • Ensuring appropriate conduct in rehearsals by choreographers, répétiteurs, guest teachers, and dancers;

    • Attending and monitoring all rehearsals and performances to ensure choreography is accurately reproduced;

    • Work closely with the Production team to ensure successful preparation for performances.

  • Confer with the Artistic Director and other Artistic Staff to oversee all scheduling for dancers and trainees;

  • Play leadership role in BDM touring, acting as liaison, coach, and ambassador for BDM during Summer STEM tour, Nutcracker touring, and any other performances as required;

  • Assist Artistic Director to oversee all audition organization and management including traveling outside of the state to attend auditions;

  • Act as community liaison for BDM, working and engaging with partners to support the logistics and execution of educational and artistic programming, including teaching community workshops and leading summer intensives;

  • Assist in the capture of rehearsal and informal footage, video and photographs, including managing the capture and cataloging of archival performance footage;

  • Aid in the creation of materials that bring the artistic work of the company to life, including production descriptions, playbill content, and other content;

  • Other such duties as may reasonably be required by the Artistic Director.

Work Environment

Travel as required; may occasionally travel to sites that are not wheelchair accessible. Mental: Clear and conceptual thinking ability; excellent judgment, troubleshooting, problem solving, analysis, and discretion; ability to handle work-related stress; ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously; and ability to meet deadlines. Physical: High degree of physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily coaching nature. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. May require walking primarily on a level surface for long periods throughout the day. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and talk and hear. Must have visual acuity to read and draft reports, memos, letters, etc. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision adequate for the incumbent to perform the responsibilities and functions of the job efficiently. Must be able to speak and communicate clearly.
