Through world-class training and performance opportunities for aspiring dancers, Ballet Des Moines is developing the next generation of professional dancers. Our annual production of The Nutcracker features more than 300 local dancers, ranging from young children experiencing their first time on stage to young adults who have trained for years aspiring to careers as professionals. We also provide opportunities for young dancers to observe, participate and interact with professionals in their daily work routine of class and rehearsals.
Each year, Ballet Des Moines’ Nutcracker Performance for the Schools provides school children in the Greater Des Moines area the opportunity to attend special performances of The Nutcracker at Hoyt Sherman Place.
At The Nutcracker school show, audience members will experience:
A history about Hoyt Sherman Place and the time period in whichThe Nutcracker was created.
Ballet terminology and technique demonstrations.
A 30-minute preview of our professional performance.
Guided narration that highlights the technical aspects of the production.
If you have questions or would like information on the 2018 school show production, please e-mail Blythe Watkins.
Ballet Des Moines promotes diversity through the artists we attract; by the types of productions we present; and by encouraging appreciation of different forms of dance. In addition to regular productions, Ballet Des Moines sponsors and participates in many community events extending its impact to a larger, more diverse audience in central Iowa. These performances highlight our Nutcracker and Fall and Spring Show productions.
